Partner's Pest Control :: Learning Center :: Flea

Cat FleaAnother blood-sucking parasite of the insect world is the flea. This wingless pest has a mouth which has adapted to piercing skin and feeding off blood. Fleas are exceptionally small, ranging in size from 1/16 to around 1/8 of an inch. The structure of their bodies allows easy travel through the clothes, hair, or feathers of the host on which it resides. Fleas have legs which allow for incredible jumping ability. Vertically a flea can travel up to seven inches. Horizontally the flea can travel up to thirteen inches. These distances make the flea one of the best known jumpers, relative to body size, of all known animals. Once it reaches adulthood a flea’s life span can take a total of two weeks or it can last up to a few months depending on conditions. When present in humans a flea bite may cause rash due to an allergic reaction to the flea’s saliva.
